WELCOME MESSAGE

Happy Korean Independence Movement Day (or March 1st Day, 삼일절)! On March 1, 1919, the Korean independence movement mobilized an estimated two million people in one of the largest nonviolent protests in modern history. In the spirit of national unity this month, learn about the Korean national flag (태극기)!

The national flag of Korea, the 태극기, reflects the universal principle of balance in nature and humanity. Upon a white background symbolizing peace and purity, at the center of the flag is the 태극, a red-and-blue circle representing the harmony of (yin) and (yang). Red (yang) symbolizes active, positive cosmic energy, while blue (yin) represents calm, receptive energy.

That same balance continues in the four (trigrams), the black lines surrounding the circle. Each trigram is composed of solid lines (yang) and broken lines (yin) and represents one of the dynamic forces of nature. From the central circle to the outer trigrams, yin and yang interact to express continuous balance and universal harmony.

The trigrams appear in the following positions on the flag:

  • 건 (☰) heaven – top left: three solid lines, pure yang energy
  • 감 (☵) water – top right: solid line between two broken lines
  • 리 (☲) fire – bottom left: broken line between two solid lines
  • 곤 (☷) earth – bottom right: three broken lines, pure yin energy

I hope you’re enjoying our content as we continue to explore new ways to advance our mission of fostering greater awareness, understanding, and cooperation between the people of the United States and Korea. Read on to see what we have planned next month across our Business & Economics, Policy, Arts & Culture, and Education departments.
